A minor fire incident occurred at the Idu Train Station in Abuja on Wednesday evening following an electrical fault, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has said.
The fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m. in the station’s low-voltage electrical room and was quickly contained by maintenance personnel, according to the corporation.
The NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying preliminary assessment showed that some electrical supply cables connected to the station’s control panels were damaged.
However, the corporation said the station’s alternative solar power system was not affected by the incident.
It added that power had been temporarily restored to the station’s lifts and escalators, with 28 of the 29 facilities currently operational.
The NRC assured passengers that the incident would not disrupt train services between Abuja and Kaduna, with scheduled operations continuing as normal.
“Our technical team is carrying out a detailed assessment to establish the cause of the electrical fault and permanently restore the affected installations.
“The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has also been notified and will provide the necessary technical support,” the statement said.
The corporation said further updates would be provided as the technical assessment progresses.
