The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele resumed duty on Monday after his annual vacation abroad, according to a statement by the apex bank’s Director of Corporate Communication, Mr Osita Nwanisobi.
Since his absence from the public view last month, there have been speculations about his status as the No 1 banker, including allegations of investigation by the secret service for which the Department of State Service (DSS) is reportedly planning to arrest him.
DSS had gone to court to obtain a warrant to arrest Emefiele, but the court declined the request. The court also barred the secret service from arresting, inviting, or detaining the CBN governor.
Just before the CBN statement on Monday, the media have been awashed with alleged invasion of the CBN headquarters by the DSS, condoning off the office of the embattled governor of the apex bank.
The DSS debunked however debunked the report that it invaded the CBN and arrested its governor.
The Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya said that this “is fake news and quite misleading”.
In its statement on Monday, the CBN said that Emefiele resumed work on Monday with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for 23rd and 24th January.
Nwanisobi added that the governor remains committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He thanked the public for keeping faith with the bank and urged Nigerians to continue to support its policies aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general.
