Health workers in Enugu State, under the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), have appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to fulfil his promise to implement the 100 per cent Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for members of the union.
The state chairperson of MHWUN, Dr Nnenna Juliet Oraedu, made the appeal while addressing journalists after the union’s meeting in Enugu at the weekend.
Oraedu expressed concern over the continued exclusion of MHWUN members from the payment of hazard allowance and the full implementation of the approved CONHESS.
She said the union had been demanding the implementation of the salary structure since 2023, noting that other categories of health workers in the state had benefited while members of MHWUN were still awaiting action from the government.
According to her, Governor Mbah promised in April to pay hazard allowance to health workers. However, she said members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and other groups had received the allowance while MHWUN members remained excluded.
Oraedu appealed to the governor to consider the plight of cleaners, porters, mortuary attendants and other non-medical personnel who provide essential services in health facilities across the state.
She stressed that such workers also face economic difficulties and occupational hazards in the course of their duties and should therefore benefit from the approved allowances and salary structure.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Nkanu West Enugu State House of Assembly election, Ifeanyi Nnamani, has described Governor Mbah’s performance as the major selling point for candidates contesting under the party’s platform.
Nnamani said candidates flying the APC flag would have little difficulty securing electoral victories because of what he described as the governor’s achievements across critical sectors.
Speaking during a media interaction, he said Mbah’s performance had helped reposition the APC and strengthen its acceptance among residents of the state.
Nnamani further praised the governor’s administration for what he described as achievements across various sectors, arguing that Mbah had contributed to restoring Enugu to what he called its former glory.
