At the end of Matchday 2, Enyimba – the record title holders of the Nigerian top flight league – and title holders Rivers United have shown that they mean business in winning the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier League. Both teams have three points as against two by each of Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance.

Enyimba beat Lobi Stars in the first game of the day at Mobolaji Johnson Area on the Lagos Island, thanks to 16th minute strike by Chukwuemeka Obioma. That was enough to see off another former champions Lobi Stars, who are now at the bottom of the table after picking only a point from two matches.

Rivers United – a lone goal winner over Sunshine Stars on Matchday 1, came from behind to settle for 2-2 against Remo Stars.

In the 16th minute, Nyima Nwagua shot the Pride of Rivers ahead. After the restart, midfielder Olamilekan appeared to have got a new boots as he not only leveled up in the 71st minute, but also gave Remo what appeared to be a decider in the third minute of added time.

But Abegunrin would have the last word three minutes later with River United’s equaliser.

In the last game of the day, Bendel Insurance continued their reputation for shared honours in the league by playing 1-1 with Sunshine Stars. Divine Nwackukwu struck early as his goal arrived just seven minutes into the fixture.

But Ekerette Udom cancelled the lead in the 62nd minute to have both teams going home with a point apiece.

Thursday’s fixtures: Bendel Insurance v Enyimba (2 pm), Remo Stars v Sunshine Stars (4:30 pm), Lobi Stars v Rivers United (7 pm)
