The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning over the death of former Stationery Stores FC star, Ibrahim Babangida, in an automobile crash on Thursday.
The elder Tijani Babangida, who played for the Super Eagles as well as Ajax Amsterdam, was also involved in the accident along with his wife, son and maid. Tijani escaped unhurt in the crash, while the others in the crash are in a critical situation in hospital in Kaduna.
According to a statement by the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), headed by Tijani, the household was travelling on the Kaduna-Zaria highway when the accident occurred.
According to PFAN General Secretary, Emmanuel Babayaro, “the Babangida family that included Tijani, his wife, son, maid and Ibrahim, were travelling on the Kaduna-Zaria highway yesterday, when the fatal accident occurred”.
Babayaro, while expressing deep regrets and sorrow on behalf of the players union, remarked that the association would issue further statements on its plan towards supporting the bereaved family.
Ibrahim, who won the 1993 FIFA U17 World Cup alongside the likes of Celestine Babayaro, Nwankwo Kanu and Wilson Oruma, will be buried according to Muslim rites in Kaduna today, Friday, 10 May 2024.
