President Bola Tinubu has approved the extension of the yuletide free train service till Sunday 7th January to allow more Nigerians who are yet to return to their stations enjoy the benefit.
The Federal Government announced a free train service on all serviced routes and 50 per cent rebate on road transportation from 21st December 2023 to 4th January 2024 on specific routes to reduce the burden of high cost of public transportation during the just concluded Christmas and new year holidays.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, “while over 163,000 Nigerians benefited from successful first leg of the initiative, President Tinubu, in further demonstration of his care for the welfare of Nigerians, directed that the free train service should be made available for extra 3 days to allow more Nigerians to take the advantage”.
The minister said that the extension applies to all three routes being serviced by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC): Lagos – Ibadan, Warri -Itakpe and Abuja – Kaduna.
The NRC had earlier announced that the free ride services would end on Thursday, 4th January 2024.
This followed the announcement by the Federal Government of 50 per cent waiver on interstate round transport and free train rides as part of moves to cushion the impact of the high cost of living in the country, especially during Yuletide.
