Hoodlums have reportedly killed two policemen attached to the Ebonyi State Police Command.
According to the Punch, the incident took place at Nwofe, a sub-burb of the Abakaliki metropolis in the Izzi Local Government Area, on Friday morning.
The victims were said to be part of a patrol team that was on surveillance in the area.
A statement from the police spokesperson in the state, Superintendent Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident, adding that another operative was injured in the attack.
The statement read, “Today 17/11/2023 around 8.30 am, operatives of the command on patrol at Nwofe Road at the outskirt of Abakaliki were attacked by armed hoodlums using a tinted Highlander vehicle with registration number unknown.
“Two of the operatives were fatally wounded, while one is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
“The state Commissioner, Augustina Ogbodo, on receiving the distress call immediately dispatched tactical teams to the scene. They swung into action by giving the hoodlums a hot chase, but the hoodlums escaped.
“The Commissioner of Police also visited the scene of the incident with her management team for an on-the-spot assessment.
“She is using this medium to call on well-meaning individuals of the state to avail the command useful information that can lead to the arrest of the fleeing hoodlums while assuring them of round-the-clock visibility patrol of the state”.
