In Kano, NDLEA arrests 1,064, seizes 7530.813kg drugs in a year

The Kano State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it arrested at least 1,064 suspects between June last year and this month.

In a statement on Friday, the acting Public Relations Officer of the Command, Sadik Maigatari said the suspects arrested included 1,001 males.

He also said, within the period, the command recovered 7530.813 kilogrammes, which included 5228.673 kilogrammes of cannabis, 2096.837 kilogrammes of psychotropic substances, cocaine, 47.013 kilogrammes and heroin, 65.24 kilogrammes.

Maigatari stated that 96 clients were admitted to the command’s Drug Demand Reduction, 92 of whom are males.

He further stated that from the number, 68 were discharged, while 28 were still under rehabilitation.

“We also conducted brief intervention on 1,081 people, mostly males (701) and females (380).

“In our prosecution unit, we charged to court a total number of 93 cases from June 26th 2022, to June 26th 2023, and secured 111 convictions”.

The spokesman added that the command currently has 126 pending cases.

He stressed that the command adoption of the War Against Drug Abuse campaign program, as a prevention approach has proven to be highly effective.

“This year, we achieved remarkable success in dislodging notorious drug joints and arresting dealers and users.

“Some of the joints we raided and dislodged include Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Bubbles Club, Kofar Na’isa, and many more.

“The creation of two additional area commands in Rano and Tudun Wada which has also enhanced our capability to crack down on drug abuse and trafficking in the state”, he said.
