Iran’s top military official has voiced scepticism about Israel’s commitment to the recently brokered ceasefire that ended a 12-day conflict between the two nations earlier this month, Times of India reported.

Speaking on Sunday, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, said Iran remains prepared to retaliate if hostilities resume, citing ‘serious doubts’ over Israel’s willingness to uphold the ceasefire agreement.

‘We did not start the war, but we have responded to the aggressor with all our power.

‘As we have serious doubts over the enemy’s compliance with its commitments, including the ceasefire, we are ready to respond with force if attacked again’, Mousavi said during an address broadcast by Iranian state television.

The ceasefire, announced on Tuesday by U.S. President Donald Trump, brought a halt to the intense fighting that erupted earlier this month.

One of the most devastating incidents during the conflict was an Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin prison, which killed at least 71 people, according to Iran’s judiciary.

The strike left large portions of the prison complex in ruins and sparked international concern.

Tensions between the two regional rivals remain high, despite the temporary truce, as both sides accuse each other of provocations and violations.
