Nigeria and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman will carry Africa’s hopes as the continent’s sole representative at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday (today).

The 27-year-old heads into the glamorous event in red-hot form after a spectacular performance in Atalanta’s 6-1 victory on Saturday, where he scored twice and provided two assists before being substituted in the 56th minute.

Lookman’s nomination marks a significant milestone in his career, making him the only African to be shortlisted for the award this year.

“It’s special being on the list and even more special being the only African”, Lookman told BBC Sport Africa.

“We have achieved great things this year, with club and country. To be recognised as one of the contenders is a great achievement”.

The former England youth international’s nomination follows an exceptional year that saw him make history as the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, leading Atalanta to their first-ever Europa League triumph against Bayer Leverkusen.

“That night was special”, Lookman recalled. “The way we did it was incredible because Leverkusen were on fire that season. Those are the moments you wish and dream for”.

His journey to stardom has been remarkable since joining Atalanta in August 2022. Under coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s attacking philosophy, Lookman has flourished in northern Italy, adapting seamlessly to a new country and football culture.

“Coming out of my comfort zone is never easy, but I’m open to that idea of learning and wanting to be better – not just as a player, but as a person also”, he added.

The Super Eagles forward’s impressive performances have also made him the overwhelming favourite for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he faces competition from compatriot William Troost-Ekong and eight other nominees.

Despite his individual success, Lookman remains focused on collective achievements, particularly with the national team. His contributions were crucial in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 AFCON final, where they finished as runners-up to hosts Ivory Coast.

“I’m anticipating the future because I’m looking forward to achieving great things”, he said.

“I’m never really satisfied. That’s always my mindset – let’s go for more”.
