The Kano State House of Assembly has resolved to review the law that created five emirates in the state.

In May 2019, the assembly approved the amendment of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, which paved the way for the decentralisation.

The legislation was purportedly conceived to whittle the powers of the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

Subsequently, the then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed the bill into law.

With the law, the state has five emirates — Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi.

On 9 March 2020, Ganduje deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano “for total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor”.

During plenary on Tuesday, the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Hussaini Dala moved a motion for the amendment of the law.

Dala said that the law was not conceived in good faith, while raising concerns over the creation of the emirates.

Afterwards, the House resolved to amend the law.

In the buildup to the 2023 election, there were speculations that the law would be amended if the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not win the Kano governorship election.

Governor Abba Yusuf contested last year’s election on the ticket of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In January, NNPP presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso said Yusuf would revisit the creation of new emirates in the state by the former administration.
