Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said that the local government council election would be held shortly in the state.

Assenting to the Local Government Amendment Bill at the Government House, Ilorin, AbdulRazaq said: “We are looking forward to holding the local government elections very shortly”.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye, late Friday, the governor thanked the state House of Assembly for its legislative roles on the Local Government Elections Bill, which he noted now paves the way for the conduct of the elections.

The local government election was held last in the state in October 2017.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission has said that it would flag off the activities leading to the conduct of local government elections in the state in February 2024.

In a statement, the chairman of the Commission, Mr Okanla Baba said that the commission applauded the Kwara State House of Assembly for the passage of new amendments to the law governing the conduct of the local council elections in the state.

“We are excited to receive the news of the passage of the amendments to the law. While the commission looks forward to the signing of the bill any moment from now, we will, in February, announce activities for the conduct of the local government elections.

“We urge all stakeholders to support this process”, the statement said.

The state House of Assembly at its plenary on Tuesday approved the amendment to the state Electoral Commission Bill.

After considering the report of the Joint Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary and Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs at the Committee of Whole, the Clerk to the House, Alhaji Olayiwola Ahmed was directed to read the Bill the third time and thereafter passed through third reading and final passage.
