Lagos Anglican Girls’ Grammar School (LAGGS) is celebrating her 70th Founder’s Day anniversary this month with week-long activities, organised by the school’s management and the Lagos Anglican Girls’ Grammar School Old Girls Association (LAGGSOGA).
Its major event is LAGGSOGA Global Reunion and Launching of N250 million Endowment Funds, scheduled for 26 January 2025 at Eko Club, with the theme, ‘LAGGSOGA: Cherished Memories, Reunion and Fundraising’.
To be hosted by the President, Mrs. Grace Ben-Okezie and her Executives, it will raise funds for designated projects in the school. These include construction and furnishing of a standard school dining hall, solar installation, construction of staff quarters, renovation and aesthetic beautification of school hostel and scholarship.
The school was founded on 27 January 1955 by the Church Missionary Society (Lagos Anglican Mission) with the mission ‘to raise God-fearing women who will be able to stand the test of time’. In addition to their desire for excellent education, the proprietors also aimed to develop the girl-child into a self-reliant and disciplined woman. Indeed, the school’s motto ‘Our Best in Everything’, which is enshrined in the faith of the founding fathers, comes to play at all times, and is imbued in every girl that passes through the school.
The school has since continued to empower girls, from the youngest to the oldest, to become interested and engaged with the world around them, and able to hold their own socially and intellectually.
As one of the finest secondary schools in Nigeria, LAGGS has served as a launchpad for many successful entrepreneurs, professionals, government officials, social workers, and scholars who are transforming the world with their ideas and innovations.
LAGGSOGA, being a gathering of old students of the school, started many years ago, but was stabilised in 1991/92. The inaugural meeting was hosted by Mrs. Oluyomi Labode, the then school principal and an old girl.
After a few meetings, LAGGSOGA held its elections into executive offices, and a constitution committee was also set up. The first President of the association was Mrs. Patience Fehintola Benson (the school’s first Head Girl), who sadly passed away early 2024. Under her leadership, the alumni grew, and thrived. With the growth of the association, more Alumni members got more involved with the growth of the school.
Over the years LAGGSOGA, through the support from various year-sets, have provided the school with additional standard infrastructure, quantitative education and quality personnel, which has resulted in the students excelling in their various fields of endeavours.
