The Lagos State Government (LASG) has revealed its plans to introduce smart bins in homes and business environments to ensure effective waste management.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer at Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

He revealed that the Highway Sanitation Unit and Marine Waste and Vegetal Control Unit had been conducting cleanups between the Ajah-Jubilee Bridge and Abraham Adesanya Roundabout.

“This deep clean exercise will continue to Sangotedo and Awoyaya along the newly re-constructed Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Simultaneously, our Monitoring and Compliance Unit, working with @LAGESCOfficial has begun an enforcement exercise to remove illegal roadside traders, arrest cart-pushers, and ensure that the numerous business outlets along the highway containerise their waste and enroll with PSP operators.

“We are also introducing the new smart bins as the preferred waste bin for households and businesses because it enables us to monitor the efficiency of PSP operators.

“We are enforcing a #ZeroTolerance policy for environmental offences”, he wrote on X, adding that the state would not tolerate dumping of waste on the streets, highways, and drainage channels.

In April, LAWMA cleared a heap of waste in a drainage located opposite Adebola Idowu Street in the Kosofe Local Government Area of the state.

The move by LAWMA followed a report by Saturday PUNCH drawing attention to the situation.

The Director of Public Affairs, LAWMA, Sade Kadiri, encouraged residents to understand how to manage their waste, noting that mismanagement of waste could have negative consequences, including flooding, sicknesses, and diseases.
