The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has announced a 21-day traffic diversion on the Marine bridge to allow for maintenance works.
The Federal Ministry of Works is to handle the repairs.
According to a statement by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the diversion would commence on Sunday, 18 May to Sunday, 8 June 2025.
He said that, to minimise traffic disruption, the maintenance has been divided into two phases.
The statement read: ‘Phase 1 will span from the foot of Marine Bridge (Lawani Oguntayo Road inbound Apapa/Costain) while Phase 2 will cover ljora Badia and Lilypond Access Ramp inbound Apapa.
‘During this course of the maintenance, motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
‘PHASE 1 — Motorists inbound Apapa from ljora Olopa. Motorists from Ijora Olopa heading towards Apapa are to use Ijora Causeway access ramp by Omni Retail Company and continue their journey.
‘PHASE 2 — Motorists Inbound Apapa from Costain. Motorists heading to Apapa from Costain will be diverted into a contraflow on the lane inbound Costain.
‘In the same vein, from 2nd to 8th June, 2025, Motorists from ljora Olopa going to Apapa will be diverted through Ijora Causeway access ramp by Omni Retail Company into Lilypond Access Road to continue their journeys’.
The commissioner said that the bridge will be fully reopened on Monday, 9 June 2025.
He further said that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would control vehicular movement along the corridor during the period.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Engr. Olukorede Kesha had issued a statement that the closure would begin at 7 am on Sunday, 18 May 18.
She said that some sections of the bridge would be completely closed, while others would experience partial closure during the period.
Mrs. Kesha said that the repairs would involve lifting the bridge deck to replace worn-out bearings and carrying out other critical maintenance work.
According to her, the aim is to make the bridge safer and more comfortable for motorists and pedestrians.
Kesha said: ‘We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but this is a necessary step to keep the bridge in good condition and ensure safety of all road users’.
She added that traffic diversion had been carefully arranged and traffic officials would be on ground to guide motorists and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
She also appealed to residents, commuters and business owners in the area to plan their movements ahead and give cooperation during the period.
‘Safety signs and traffic management tools will be put in place to minimise disruption.
‘We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and thank members of the public for their patience’, she added.
