The Inter Miami forward said the award held special significance for his family, revealing that his father was particularly eager for him to attend the presentation ceremony despite the demands of his playing schedule.
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, who shared Messi’s remarks on X on Friday, the Argentine disclosed that his father had strongly encouraged him to travel for the occasion.
“My father was extremely excited about this award,” Messi said.
“We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award,” he added.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said the recognition was about more than his performances and accomplishments throughout his career, highlighting its broader personal significance.
“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career,” he said.
Messi added that his father was delighted by the honour and expressed confidence that he was also enjoying the moment.
“Honestly, he was very happy about this recognition and that’s why I’m sure he’s enjoying it too,” the footballer said.
The award adds to Messi’s extensive collection of individual and team honours accumulated over a career spanning some of football’s biggest stages.
The Argentine legend has won multiple Ballon d’Or titles, led his country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar and enjoyed significant success at club level, particularly during his time at Barcelona.
His achievements have cemented his status as one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport.
The Princesa de Asturias Awards recognise outstanding contributions across several disciplines, including sport, the arts, scientific research and international cooperation. The sports category honours individuals and organisations whose achievements have made a significant impact in their field.
