The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, has resigned his ministerial appointment to pursue a senatorial ambition in Kebbi State during the 2027 general elections.
President Bola Tinubu had directed that appointees seeking elective offices resign their positions on or before 31 March 2026.
Sununu, who assumed duty in Humanitarian Affairs in November 2024, stated that he was deployed to restore the ministry’s image.
When he assumed duty in the ministry, Sununu said: ‘We were sent here to redeem the image of this ministry. It is only when we redeem the image that we can have trust. Without trust, whatever we have done will be underrated and will not be seen as an impact.
‘In doing this, we are going to provide leadership, guidance, and we will depend on you for your maximum input because you are the technocrats of the ministry, you are the owners of institutional memory, you are those who know the avoidable infractions.
‘So, we must be able to work together to avoid those avoidable infractions. It’s only when we do that, then the mission and vision of Mr. President to eradicate poverty and provide effective humanitarian services will be appreciated by Nigerians and we are ready to do that’.
He, however, resigned his position to pursue his senatorial ambition in Kebbi State.
Before his deployment to the Humanitarian ministry, he was the Minister of State for Education.
Before his ministerial appointment, Sununu represented the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the Committee on Healthcare Services.
