Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang has expressed sadness over the demise of the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Very Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo.
Fr. Lubo reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday at a hospital in Jos, the state capital, after a brief illness following an accident last week.
The news of his passing was confirmed to The PUNCH through a statement by the Archdiocesan Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Daniel Gyang.
The statement read: ‘On a sad note but with total submission to the will of God, we hereby announce the passing unto eternal glory of Very Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Polycap Lubo, who passed on to eternal glory in the wee hours of the morning of Sunday 15th June 2025.
‘The Archbishop condoles with his immediate family, CAN Plateau State chapter, the presbyterium of Jos, the parishioners of St William’s Parish, Zawan where he was Parish Priest and Dean of Zawan Deanery, and indeed all the religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese’.
In a condolence message on Sunday, Mutfwang described Fr Lubo’s death as ‘a monumental loss to his immediate family, the Plateau State CAN family, and indeed the entire state and nation’.
He said ‘Fr Lubo laboured tirelessly in the Lord’s vineyard, nurturing his flock and directing countless souls toward the Kingdom of God.
‘His steadfast commitment to the quest for enduring peace and unity on the Plateau remains a testimony that will speak for generations’.
Recalling the priest’s jovial spirit and deep faith, the governor echoed the words of Apostle Paul, saying, ‘For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain’.
He noted that Fr Lubo’s life exemplified Christ-like service, generosity, and courage, qualities that reverberated far beyond the pulpit.
