The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has confirmed 14 new cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative infections to 1,035.
The agency disclosed this in its Week 33 Lassa fever situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the report, the new cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16 in Bauchi, Benue, Ondo and Edo states.
The NCDC said 252 deaths had been recorded, pushing the case fatality rate to 24.4 per cent, compared with 18.6 per cent recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
The 14 new infections represent an increase from the four confirmed cases recorded in epidemiological Week 32, when cases were reported in Ondo and Edo states.
During Week 32, cumulative infections stood at 1,021, while 240 deaths had been recorded, resulting in a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.
The agency said:
“The Week 32 figure represents a decline from 17 confirmed cases recorded during epidemiological Week 31, indicating fluctuations in weekly transmission.”
By Week 33, the NCDC reported that 23 states had recorded at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 local government areas.
The agency said Lassa fever remained a significant public health concern in affected states and assured Nigerians that it would continue its surveillance and response activities to monitor and contain the spread of the disease.
