Youths in the Torugbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State are in a jubilant mood as the lawmaker representing Burutu federal constituency in the National Assembly, Mr Julius Pondi, has completed the construction of a new mini-pitch initiated in the riverine community.
The mini-pitch, equipped with modern facilities, including a well-maintained playing surface and seating areas for spectators, is specifically designed to host various sporting activities, with a focus on football.
Members of Torugbene community, who spoke on the project with South-South PUNCH on Tuesday, lauded Pondi, just as they eagerly anticipated the commissioning ceremony, the date of which is yet to be announced.
One of the community youth leaders, Stephanie Omokaro, stated that “the mini-pitch marks a significant step in local sports development and showcasing Pondi’s commitment to the well-being of his constituents”.
Another community youth, Anthonia Obajomi, noted that “the mini-sports complex will go a long way in assisting to train youths and tap hidden talents from the adjoining communities”.
According to South-South PUNCH, the mini-pitch initiative is part of Pondi’s efforts to develop grassroots sports infrastructure, particularly in the riverine communities of the Niger Delta.
Expressing his commitment to support local sports development in the region, Pondi told newsmen, “This mini-pitch is not just a sports facility; it is a community hub, where our young people can come together, develop their talents and build a sense of unity.
“I am proud to contribute to the growth of our community and the betterment of our youth”.
It was gathered that Pondi, in addition to the mini-pitch, has also overseen the construction of some other community development projects in the Burutu federal constituency, including community centres, health clinics and educational facilities.
The projects had been designed to improve the quality of life for residents and foster a sense of community pride, it was further gathered.
