The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, has arrested three suspects for allegedly transporting 1,779 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa from the Imeko axis to Abeokuta, the state capital.

The suspects were identified as Rauf Asogba, 28; Seun Olaniyi, 24; and Ayinla Adeniyi, 50. Confirming the arrest in a statement yesterday, the NDLEA spokesperson in Ogun State, Harris Musa, said the operation was carried out in the early hours of Saturday, 1 February 2025, following intelligence-led surveillance and tactical operations by officers of the Command.

According to Musa, the suspects were intercepted while attempting to move the illicit consignment, which was concealed in a J5 vehicle, from Imeko to Abeokuta. He described the seizure as one of the Command’s most significant operations in recent times, underscoring the NDLEA’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and curbing the circulation of narcotics across the state.

‘The consignment was uncovered after sustained intelligence gathering and tactical manoeuvring by operatives. This operation demonstrates the NDLEA’s dedication to ensuring that Ogun State does not serve as a conduit for drug trafficking’, he stated.

The State Commander, Mr Tijjani Rabe, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism, courage, and commitment, noting that their swift response and coordinated effort led to the successful interception and arrest.

Rabe reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to maintain momentum in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in the state. He assured that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the law once investigations are concluded.

He also appealed to residents to support the NDLEA’s efforts by providing credible and timely information that could help identify and disrupt drug distribution networks.

‘The public remains our most valuable ally in achieving a drug-free Ogun State and, by extension, a drug-free Nigeria. We urge citizens to continue to share actionable intelligence to aid our operations’, Rabe said.

The NDLEA reiterated its warning to individuals and groups engaged in the cultivation, trafficking, or sale of illicit drugs to desist or face the full weight of the law. The agency maintained that it would sustain its surveillance and enforcement drive to rid the state of narcotics and related crimes.
