A Kano-based tailor, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has embarked on a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
Basari, Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, began the five-day challenge on Wednesday, October 7, and is expected to conclude it on Monday night, October 12, 2026.
The attempt, tagged Sew for the Nation, is taking place at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano.
In a video shared on his social media platforms on October 1 to announce the challenge, Basari described the initiative as an opportunity to combine record-breaking with support for education and vulnerable communities.
“My name is Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, I’m the CEO of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited. I am here to announce Sew for the Nation, a Guinness World Record attempt,” he said.
The tailor explained that the project was designed to go beyond setting a record by using creativity, resilience and vocational skills to promote education and community development.
“This is more than a record, this is for every dreamer, every artisan and every young Nigerian with a vision,” he said, while calling on members of the public to support the initiative.
Basari is seeking to surpass the existing Guinness World Record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025.
Kuforiji’s achievement was officially recognised by Guinness World Records in March 2025, setting a benchmark that Basari hopes to exceed with his 120-hour challenge.
However, Basari’s attempt will be subject to the organisation’s verification requirements before any new record can be officially recognised.
