The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), on Tuesday, said the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress has caused a power outage in the state.
A statement by the AEDC management posted on X, advised residents of Abuja to find ways of managing the outage pending the restoration of power.
“We are aware of the general power outage being experienced across our franchise due to enforcement by NLC of the 2-day warning strike embarked upon by the labour union. We apologise for any inconvenience you may be experiencing as a result of this, as we continue our engagement with key stakeholders towards minimizing the impact of the strike on our customers.
“In the meantime, we recommend that you take necessary precautions to manage the outage effectively. Kindly unplug sensitive electronic devices and appliances from power sources pending the restoration of power.
“We will continue to provide updates on developments regarding the impact of the strike action on our operations through our official social media handles. Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this challenging time. We remain committed to serving you.”
It was reported that electricity workers – the National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria, joined the two-day strike initiated by the NLC.
In a communique jointly by its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero; and Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja last Friday, NLC said it took the decision to declare the two-day warning strike following the failure of the Tinubu-led administration to dialogue and engage stakeholders within the organised labour on efforts made to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the “poor masses”.
The organised labour staged a day protest last month, grounding activities in major cities across the country.
The NLC listed some other reasons why it would mobilize its members for the nationwide shutdown to include police laying siege at the national headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers; alleged exploitation of the rights of workers in Imo state; interference in trade union matters by the Abia State government and the proposed demolition by the new minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike among others.
