A leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ali Madaki is in the custody of the Kano police command over illegal possession of firearms.

According to TheCable, Madaki was invited for questioning by the police on Wednesday.

Haruna Abdullahi, the police spokesperson in Kano, confirm the development on Thursday morning.

Abdullahi said Madaki is still in police custody and that an investigation is ongoing.

Madaki is the house of representatives member-elect for Dala federal constituency of Kano.

The development comes days after Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa was arrested by the police for his alleged role in attacks in Kano State during the general election.

On Wednesday, he was charged to court and remanded in prison over alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of a firearm, mischief, and public disturbance.

There were violent clashes in Kano during the elections. The clashes were allegedly sponsored by candidates contesting for elective office.
