NPFL 2022/23: IMC releases fixtures; Super 6 to determine champions

If all goes according to plan, the group phase of the 2022/23 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will end by 14th May 2023, enough time to registered qualified teams for the 2023/24 CAF club competitions.

With the abridged season necessitating two groups, the top three teams in each group with feature in the Super Six to determine the champions and runners-up to be registered for CAF club competitions. NPFL’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) will fix the Super Six date later.

The new season flags off on 8th January and observe mid-season break in the weekend of 18th February, resuming on 25th March.

According to the IMC, the schedule has captured the 2023 national and state elections which respectively hold on 25th February to and 11th March.

As a result of the general elections, the season’s fixture has provided for three midweek games on MatchDays 2, 5 and 11.

The 20 teams are divided into two sections, each playing 18 matches.

In Group A are last season’s runners-up Plateau United, third placed Remo Stars, and the most decorated team in Nigeria’s topflight league, Enyimba. Others are former continental champions Shooting Stars, 2020/21 champions Akwa United, Nasarawa United, Kwara United (fourth last season), Gombe United and two promoted sides – Bendel Insurance and El-Kanemi Warriors.

Group B has defending champions Rivers United, seven-time winners Rangers, Wikki Tourists, Sunshine Stars, Niger Tornadoes, Abia Warriors, Dakkada, Lobi Stars, Abia Warriors, and two sides that gained promotion from the Nigeria National League – Bayelsa United and Doma United.

The IMC however added a caveat, providing for changes when necessary to accommodate club licensing decisions, television broadcast schedules and CAF inter-club fixtures.
