The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will kick off on Friday, August 22, 2025, the league body has announced.

Chairman of the NPFL board, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, made this known on Friday at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) headquarters in Abuja.

The announcement is expected to be followed by the release of full fixtures for the upcoming season even as the Nigerian topflight organisers are still awaiting the four promoted teams from the Nigeria National League (NNL) – the country’s second division.

Elegbeleye emphasised the significance of the date as part of the federation’s strategy to align domestic football calendars with continental competitions.

The upcoming season’s kick-off date will mark the third consecutive season that the NPFL has started its season in August as part of the board’s efforts to realign with the global football calendar.

The process began with an abridged season which culminated into a Super 6 playoff in 2023. Afterwards, the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons began in September and August respectively.

Elegbeleye said the move underscores the federation’s commitment to providing consistency and boosting league performance across Africa.

The new season’s fixtures, broadcast arrangements, and player registration deadlines are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The incoming season will also mark the third year of the five-year broadcast deal with StarTimes which is said to be worth N6 billion.

Remo Stars won the 2024/25 NPFL title, claiming 71 points to win their first-ever NPFL title.
