Reeling from the pains of the death of one of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) referees, Dr Kingsley Nnaemeka Eneogwe, the league’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) has directed players and officials to honour the late Abia State match official before and during MatchDay 6.
Group A soaraway leaders Bendel Insurance will put their unbeaten run on the line as they host Gombe United in the first fixture of Matchday 6 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City on Saturday. The Benin Arsenal have won all five matches in their return to the topflight this season.
In his directive, IMC Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye said it is a mark of respect for the young member of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), who died in a road accident on his way home from a MatchDay 5 fixture in Kaduna. Nasarawa United, the “home team” lost that game 1-2 to Plateau United.
“Referees officiating in MatchDay 6 fixtures are to observe one minute silence before kickoff to honour their fallen colleague”, the IMC boss directed and added, “we have also informed the clubs that all their players listed for this weekend’s games should wear black armbands”.
He said that the IMC is in touch with the NRA leadership to get updated on further developments as would be communicated by the family.
A practising medical doctor, Eneogwe died on Thursday in the auto crash that happened along Abuja-Kogi Road.
