The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has provisionally scheduled the 2026/27 season to begin between 27 and 29 August, following a stakeholders’ meeting involving the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, league organisers and club owners in Abuja.
According to the approved domestic football calendar, the season is expected to conclude on 28 May 2027. The schedule also factors in fixtures for the President Federation Cup, as authorities push for a more organised and predictable structure for Nigerian club football.
A major highlight of the upcoming campaign is a significant financial boost, with the league champions set to receive ₦1 billion in prize money. The announcement was made by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, marking the largest winner’s reward in the history of Nigerian football.
Officials say the enhanced prize fund is part of wider reforms aimed at increasing the commercial appeal of the NPFL, improving competitiveness, and attracting greater private investment into the domestic game.
The new season will also feature four newly promoted clubs from the Nigeria National League (NNL), following the conclusion of the 2025/26 second-tier campaign. Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees and Doma United earned promotion to the top division, replacing four clubs relegated from the NPFL.
They will join defending champions Enugu Rangers, who secured their ninth league title after finishing top of the table in the 2025/26 season.
League officials say the restructuring and financial reforms are designed to strengthen the domestic football ecosystem and improve the overall quality and sustainability of the competition.
