The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has struck a deal to put all matches in the upcoming Super 6 in Lagos on television, through SuperSport.
The Super 6, which runs from Saturday 3rd June to Sunday 11th June, will feature the top three teams in each of the two groups of the regular NPFL season with round-robin matched played at the Mobolaji Johnson Area on the Lagos Island. The winners will not only emerged this season’s NPFL champions but will also represent the country in next season’s CAF Champions League, together with the first runners-up. The third placed teams and the Federation Cup champions will be registered for the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.
The deal with the South Africa-based cable satellite television giant is the latest heartwarming news coming from the IMC, which has impacted positively on the league in about a year of existence.
Elated by the development, IMC Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye said: “We have just concluded with SuperSport to cover the Super 6. It is a cheering news. The players will get an international recognition again, all the matches will be televised live and that will held a great deal in showcasing our league not just in sub-Saharan Africa, but the globe at large”.
He added that televising the matches would also ensure better and fair officiating, as the referees would be put on their toes and challenged to give their best; better than what they did in the regular season.
“It was not easy to reach an agreement, but we did all we could. We went forth and back and we finally came to an agreement”.
IMC hoped that the best team would win the NPFL, and the country would have worthy representatives in the two CAF organised Inter-Club competitions next season.
Bendel Insurance, Remo Stars, Enyimba emerged from from Group A in the regular season out of 10 teams in that section.
Group B will be represented by title holders Rivers United, Lobi Stars, and Sunshine Stars.
