The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Osun State Secretariat, has confirmed that corps member Adewebi Opeoluwa is safe and not missing, following reports about her whereabouts on social media.
The NYSC disclosed this in a statement shared on its Facebook page on Tuesday, after reports emerged that Adewebi had allegedly been missing since September 20.
In a statement titled, “Corps Member Adewebi Meets NYSC Osun State Coordinator”, the NYSC said Adewebi was seen at its Osun State Secretariat in Osogbo on Monday, where she met with the State Coordinator, Ekeng Ita Kubiangha.
The statement read, “Corps Member, Adewebi Opeoluwa, is safe and well. She was seen on Monday at the NYSC Osun State Secretariat, Osogbo, during a meeting with the State Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Ita Kubiangha.”
The service said Assistant Directors, Vice Principals and some corps members from Adewebi’s Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) were also present at the meeting.
According to the NYSC, footage from the meeting confirmed that Adewebi was alive, safe and not missing, contrary to reports circulating on social media.
Adewebi, who is serving at St James Grammar School, also clarified that she was neither missing nor kidnapped.
In a statement posted on X by NYSC360 on Monday evening, she explained that her mother had been unable to reach her for several days, prompting her to raise an alarm which was subsequently amplified by the media.
Adewebi said, “I wish to state categorically that I was not missing neither was I kidnapped. It was because my mother was not able to reach me for some days that warranted her to raise an alarm which was amplified by the media output.”
She assured the public that she was safe and not in any danger.
“I wish to state that I am safe, accounted for and not in any danger,” she said.
Adewebi also apologised for the alarm and distress caused by the reports, explaining that the initial concern was raised in good faith because of her mother’s fears.
“The initial report was made in good faith by the media output to appease my mother who was so scared of not hearing from me,” she said.
She further apologised to the NYSC community in Osun State, including the state coordinator, her PPA, friends and colleagues, for the confusion caused by the reports.
“I sincerely apologise for any alarm, distress or confusion the post may have caused the entire NYSC community in Osun State at large, starting from my state coordinator, my PPA, my friends and colleagues. Once again I am really sorry for all the problems I have put everyone through,” she added.
