Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel, saying the nation’s appreciation for those who defend it must go beyond ceremonies and tributes.
Obi made the appeal on Friday in a message at the burial ceremony of retired Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor in Awka, Anambra State.
Reflecting on what he described as a difficult week for the Nigerian military following the loss of personnel in an aircraft crash and another helicopter crash, Obi said the incidents highlighted the sacrifices made by military personnel in the service of the country.
He stressed that retired military personnel deserved timely pension payments, accessible healthcare, decent housing and other support to enable them to live their retirement years in dignity and peace.
The former Anambra State governor added that families of military personnel should be assured that the sacrifices of their loved ones had not been forgotten.
Obi also emphasised the need to improve the welfare of serving personnel through adequate equipment, proper training, effective medical care and other essential support to enable them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” he said.
He added that those who risked their lives to defend the country deserved a nation that protected their dignity and well-being in return.
Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of Obiakor and offered his condolences to the deceased’s family, while also sympathising with families who had lost loved ones in the line of duty.
