African Games medallist Olayinka Olajide stormed to a new personal best of 11.15s (-1.0) to win the women’s 100m at the Crofoot/Corky Classic in Texas on Thursday.
She lowered her PB from the African Games trials last year (11.19s), beating Success Umukoro, who ran 11.30s to finish second.
Ruth Agadama was also in the same race and finished fifth in 11.52s, just ahead of Mercy Umoibang in 11.54s.
‘Oh my. Olayinka Olajide opens her season with a time of 11.15 for the win! Into a slight headwind of -1.0’, Texas Tech announced via X.
The 22-year-old made a grand entry into Nigeria’s athletics scene in 2024, representing the country at the African Games, African Championships and was also part of Nigeria’s contingent to the Paris Olympics.
After winning the 100m title in Asaba, Olajide went on to claim all shades of medals at the African Games in Ghana.
She won bronze in the women’s 100m, silver in the 200m and capped it with gold in the women’s 4x100m, running the second leg in the quartet that also had Justina Eyakpobeyan, Moforehan Abinusawa and Tobi Amusan.
She reproduced her relay exploits for Nigeria during the World Relays in the Bahamas, where the women’s 4x100m team sealed their ticket to the Paris Olympics Games before adding the African Championships gold in the same event in Cameroon.
Meanwhile, national record holder in the women’s high jump, Temitope Adeshina, also clinched her eighth consecutive victory this season at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout in Texas, clearing 1.86m in the women’s high jump.
Evelyn Lavielle followed with 1.80m, and Alexis Ivy took third at 1.75m.
Adeshina has been on the ascendancy again this season, winning her first NCAA title by scaling a height of 1.94m at the NCAA indoor championships in March.
Her triumph also etched her name in the history books for Nigeria as she became the first Nigerian to win an NCAA title in the high jump.
