With results from three Local Government Areas (LGAs) awaited at the collating centre, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is coasting home to victory in Saturday’s Ondo State governorship election.
The 59-year-old businessman and politician has won in all of the 15 LGAs whose results have so far been declared and polled 301,113 votes, while former Deputy Governor, Chief Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party trailed with 97,051 votes.
The other 16 candidates made no impression in the election.
The collation officer, Prof Olayemi Akinwunmi said the process would go on recess till Noon to allow for the arrival of results from the remaining LGAs.
Results are expected Odigbo, Ilaje and Ese Odo LGAs.
The 15 Local Governments Areas declared so far are Ifedore, Ondo East, Ileoluji Oke-Igbo, Idanre, Irele, Akoko South West, Owo, Ondo West, Akoko South East, Akoko North West, Ose, Akoko North East, Akure South, Akure North and Okitipupa.
Out of the 15 LGAs announced so far, it was only in Idanre that a contending issue came up. The agent of the PDP alleged vote buying, ballot box snatching and said that there was no election in some areas. He asked the returning officer to reject results from Idanre.
INEC National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, who spoke to Channels Television in Akure, the state capital before the collation commenced, had assured that the result would be declared not later than 6am.
“I can assure you that until we declare the winner, we won’t leave here. We will wait until the last local government before we leave.
“I don’t have any fear that even by 6am, maybe everything would have been over”, the National Commissioner added.
