Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is set to be appointed as head coach of the Senegal national team after reaching an agreement with the Senegalese Football Federation.

Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Vieira has agreed to take charge of the Teranga Lions with immediate effect.

The former Crystal Palace manager had been in discussions with the Senegalese federation over the vacant position before reaching an agreement to lead the national side.

Vieira will replace Pape Thiaw as Senegal head coach.

The appointment will mark the latest chapter in the Frenchman’s managerial career, having previously coached Strasbourg, Nice and Genoa.

Vieira, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Arsenal and France, is expected to bring his experience at both club and international level to the Senegal team.

The former midfielder won three Premier League titles with Arsenal and was a key member of the club’s celebrated “Invincibles” side that went unbeaten throughout the 2003/04 league season.

He also won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 with France during his international career.
