Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won re-election in Adamawa State with 430,861 votes to beat his closest rival, Senator Aishatu Dahiru (a.k.a. Binani) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 398,788 votes.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the supplementary election, which took place last Saturday, PDP had PDP 9,337 votes, while APC got 6,513. The supplementary poll was held in 69 polling units in the 20 Local Government Areas of the state, with less than 40,000 eligible voters.
Fintiri and Binani are the major contenders in the governorship poll.
At the 18th March governorship poll, which was declared inconclusive, Fintiri led with over 30,000 votes.
The final results were announced by the INEC Returning Officer in the state, Prof. Mohammed Mele.
He said the PDP governorship candidate has met the constitutional requirements and thereby returned as governor of the state.
Last Sunday morning, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Hudu Yunusa Ari created confusion by unilaterally declaring Binani the winner of the election. He did not provide any basis for his decision.
INEC immediately disowned the action, which it described as “null, void and of no effect“. Among other actions, the commission suspended further action on the result announcement, suspended Ari.
