Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said President Bola Tinubu has his respect, insisting that political criticism should focus on policies and performance rather than personal attacks.
Obi made the remarks on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive”.
The former Anambra State governor was speaking amid discussions on the state’s controversial debt situation and the need for greater accountability in public office.
Obi said he would not insult governors, the President or other public officials, regardless of political differences.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody,” he said.
“Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect.”
However, Obi said respect for public office holders should not prevent citizens and the media from questioning government decisions or assessing the performance of political leaders.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he said.
He also urged editors and journalists to scrutinise political leaders based on their records, public statements and qualifications.
Obi argued that the conduct of political leaders could shape the values of the wider society, stressing that leaders should demonstrate the standards they expect from citizens.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behaviour of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” he said.
