The Delta State Police Command has arrested a nine-man robbery syndicate said to be terrorising parts of the state and neighbouring Edo.
The command’s spokesman, Bright Edafe, in a statement on Saturday, said the suspects were apprehended at different locations between 11 and 16 August following credible intelligence by operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team.
According to Edafe, the syndicate specialised in hypnotising unsuspecting victims before dispossessing them of valuables, including phones, motorcycles, jewellery and looting their bank accounts.
‘The suspects operate mainly in Warri, Ughelli and other parts of Delta and Edo States’, he said.
The police image-maker disclosed that exhibits recovered from the gang included two Toyota Camry cars and 16 suspected stolen iPhones.
‘Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects defrauded their victims of a total of N23.5 million and also stole no fewer than 42 ladies’ motorcycles’, Edafe added.
He noted that the suspects and recovered items were in custody, while further investigation was ongoing.
