As it was when the referees whistled on the games at four centres, so it remained as the 2023/24 season of the Nigeria Premier Football League ended on Sunday. There were no twists.
Remo Stars retained their second spot to join Rangers in next season’s CAF Champions League, while third placed Enyimba will represent the country in the continent’s second tier club competitions, the CAF Confederation Cup.
Doma United could not wrought the miracle to escape relegation, while Sporting Lagos also went down to the lower division having failed in their last-ditch efforts to stay on in the top flight.
In place of Sporting Lagos (who were only promoted to the NPFL at the end of last season), Doma United, Heartland (who returned to the topflight this season), and Gombe United, will be Beyond Limit, El-Kanemi Warriors, Ikorodu City and Nasarawa United.
Based in Ikenne-Remo like Remo Stars, Beyond Limit will feature in the topflight for the first time, while Ikorodu City will play in the NPFL for the first time since their debut in the 2015-16 season.
El-Kanemi Warriors and Nasarawa United had been on and off in the NPFL.
