Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered immediate compliance of vehicles and spare part dealers to the state’s transport sector law of 2018, especially in the area of operational fees.

He equally directed the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), which supervises their operations, to align its fees with the provisions of the state Transport Sector Law of 2018.

He gave them one month to begin to comply, stating that enforcement of the new fee becomes operational on 1st March 2024.

The General Manager of MVAA, Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, who conveyed the governor’s directive recently in his office, said: “that compliance with the prescribed fees takes effect from 1st March 2024”.

He disclosed that with the directive of the Governor, the fees by MVAA will now align with the Lagos State Transport Sector Law 2018 (Schedules 1&2 of the Registration and Regulation of the Activities of Motor Vehicle and Motor Spare Parts Dealers in the state, Page 95 and 96).

He stated that the fees prescribed by the Transport Law 2018 are as follows: Motor Vehicle Dealers registered as limited liability companies will henceforth pay N150,000. While an Individual and Business name vehicle dealer will pay N100,000.

In the same vein, the registration fees for Motor Vehicle Spare Parts Dealers registered as Limited Liability Companies will be N70,000, while Individual or Business Name fees will be N50,000.

Muri-Okunola further revealed that once the approved fees take effect from 1st March 2024, anyone who defaults from making the correct payment will be prosecuted in line with section 208 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Law 2018.

He reiterated that convicted persons, incorporated or otherwise, are liable to be fined, and the business premises sealed up or business premises confiscated by the State Government.

The headline “Sanwoolu imposes new fees on Lagos vehicles parts dealers” misleading. The govt is only enforcing an existing law of 2018.
