The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on the Nigerian Police Force and the anti-graft agencies to expedite actions on recovering its funds from former national chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam.
In a statement on Thursday by the its National Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said that Gabam violated its constitution, and called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to speedy process the ‘recovery of the looted funds of the party from him.’
SDP accused Gamba of acting with ‘delusional mindset of untouchability believing he is protected by his powerful political connections to evade accountability over alleged looted party fund mismanagement’.
It alleged that the former chairman banked on ‘some powers within the systems and top circle of government officials to evade justice’.
It further alleged that Gabam has been ‘has been busy running from the house of one elderstasteman to the other, presenting a slanted narrative of his crisis situation, to get them to help intervene and save his head from being shaved by the rough scissors of the law’.
‘In the last few days, reports confirm to the national leadership of the party that he has succeeded in mobilising some funds to help him out of the deep mess he finds himself’.
SDP alleged that Gabam decided to wrongly deplore the funds to cultivate some few individuals within the ranks of the party state chairmen to help build a buffer for him, thereby further getting entangled in the web of crisis.
‘He is currently rallying a number of former state chairmen and some of the bunch of his co-travellers who were expelled alongside with him, in a meeting, through monetary inducements, of course, to possibly come out and make some public statements in his support. Truth is, all of these shadow-chasing actions are ill-advised. They serve him no good, as they amount to nothing but exercise in futility’.
The party warned its members to steer clear of the former chairman as he ‘is currently under investigation’ and also drew attention of national figures to be wary of him so as to not drag their respected name to the mud’.
Aiyenigba further said: ‘This public statement, therefore, is to inform the public that Shehu Musa Gabam is currently a subject of investigations on established financial crimes with the Nigeria Police and relevant authorities, and warns all members of the party who may probably have the tendency of falling victim to his antics, to be mindful not to be found guilty as accessories after the facts.
‘The Office of the Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police that has the petitions of the Party on this matter, to which a follow petition was made through the Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement department of his office, by the party, through the office of the National Secretary, today, 13 November 2025, is hereby called upon to bring their actions on the matter to an expeditious conclusion, to enable the SDP get the deserved justice and speedily, in the interest of Nigeria and democratic consolidation.
‘The party also uses this opportunity to draw the attention of the respected elderstastemen and national figures to whom the formal national chairman has been running, seeking intervention, to be weary of him, so as not to drag their respected names in the mud of ignominy along with him.
‘The SDP is confident that the Nigerian Police, the anti-graft agencies, and all the relevant institutions and systems will help to do justice in this well-established case of financial crimes against Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam and get him to return the looted party funds. That’s the general hope, aspiration, position and demand of the generality of the members and stakeholder of the SDP, nationwide, particularly, as had been stated in a statement by the Conference of State Chairmen of the Party during their world press conference which held two weeks ago at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja’.
