Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, will today formally launch the National Asset Restoration Programme in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The initiative, led by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), will commence with the Tractor Recovery Project aimed at revitalising the country’s agricultural sector.

The event, scheduled to take place at the Borno State Agricultural Mechanisation (BOSAMAN) Farm Centre, marks a major milestone in the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In a statement by its Director of Information, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, NASENI said the programme seeks to breathe new life into broken-down national assets, starting with agricultural machinery essential for mechanised farming.

Fully funded, supervised, and executed by NASENI, the Tractor Recovery Project is being implemented in partnership with technical collaborator Machine and Equipment Corporation Africa Limited (MECA).

The goal is to significantly enhance food security and rural development by restoring functionality to previously idle agricultural equipment.

Vice President Shettima, who is the Eminent Guest of Honour, will be joined at the launch by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum alongside NASENI Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, and other stakeholders in the agricultural and engineering sectors.

Available data indicates that while Nigeria possesses approximately 55,000 tractors, only 7,000 to 10,000 are operational.

The Tractor Recovery Project is aimed at reversing this trend by restoring hundreds of non-functional units in Borno and surrounding regions.

Each tractor has undergone comprehensive rehabilitation covering mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural systems to make them fully operational and ready for immediate use on farms.

This strategic intervention is designed to rebuild livelihoods, strengthen food production systems, and revitalise rural economies through indigenous engineering solutions.
