The singer made the comments during a recent interview on Echo Room, where he claimed that $200,000 is no longer sufficient to effectively promote a single song.
Slimcase attributed the increase in promotional costs to the growing influence of dancers, social media influencers and content creators, who he said now charge significant fees to feature artistes’ songs in their content.
“Back then dancers were begging artistes. Now you have to pay them big money, even content creators. $200,000 is not enough to blow a song now,” he said.
The “Otunba Lamba” crooner said the high cost of promotion was also contributing to the dominance of established artistes, while limiting the opportunities available to talented newcomers.
“That is why you hear the same artist and sound for over 20 years, while many upcoming artists remain unheard,” he added.
Slimcase called on music executives and other industry stakeholders to make promotional opportunities more accessible and affordable for emerging artistes.
He also urged music fans to pay greater attention to new talents instead of relying solely on influencers and content creators to determine which songs become popular and feature on their playlists.
