Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has increased the monthly state allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000, representing a 100 per cent increase.
The governor also announced a one-off cash gift of ₦30,000 for each corps member currently undergoing orientation in the state.
Aliyu made the announcements on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
He said the measures reflected his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and providing a conducive environment for their service year.
The governor also approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to strengthen the scheme’s monitoring and supervision activities, particularly in areas with difficult terrain.
In addition, he pledged to provide five cows daily to feed corps members throughout the orientation exercise.
Aliyu further directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently address challenges affecting electricity and water supply.
Speaking on the importance of the NYSC scheme, the governor said: “The role of corps members in promoting national integration and unity cannot be overemphasised.”
He disclosed that his administration had committed more than ₦1 billion to the renovation and upgrading of the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area, adding that the project was approximately 90 per cent complete.
Aliyu assured the corps members that their security and welfare would remain a priority, while urging ministries, government agencies and other employers not to reject corps members posted to them.
He also announced plans to establish a committee to ensure the effective implementation of the newly approved monthly allowance.
