Manchester City on Wednesday night has been smashed out of English Football League (Carabao) Cup as Southampton shockingly thwarted the Cityzens 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium.
With 73 percent of the possession and more passes than Southampton, City put up a lackluster effort with no shot on goal.
Furthermore, the Pep Guardiola-led team had players of the caliber of Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and others in the match, but they were unable to secure a victory.
Southampton’s Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo scored the only two goals of the match in the 23rd and 28th minutes respectively.
Southampton had four shots on target two of which landed at the back of the net. They cruise past City to secure a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Meanwhile, in another match, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 after 90 minutes on Wednesday at City Ground, but Nottingham Forest won 4-3 on penalties to advance to the Carabao Cup semifinals.
When Wolves forward Raul Jimenez leveled the score in the 64th minute, Forest was forced into a penalty shootout. Forest had taken the lead in the 18th minute and had maintained it up until that point.
Ruben Neves of Wolves and Sam Surridge of Forest both missed their first penalties but Forest quickly picked up netting in all the other four shootouts, with Wolves getting only three behind Forest’s gallant goalkeeper.
Wolves have ended their journey in the EFL while Forest advanced to the semifinals.
