Spain claimed their first FIFA Women’s World Cup title by pipping England 1-0 in the final of the ninth edition in Sydney, Australia on Sunday. Olga Carmona’s 29th minute proved just enough for the Spanish to triumph on the day.
For winning, Spain earned $4.29 million.
It was Spain’s first time in the last four of the competition, while England finished third in 2015 and fourth in the last edition (2019).
England defeated Nigeria’s Super Falcons on penalties in the Round of 16 after winning Group D. The Lionesses went on to beat Colombia 2-1 in the quarterfinals and co-hosts Australia 3-1 in the semifinals.
Spain were runners up behind Japan in Group B, winning two matches and losing 0-4 to Japan. They walloped Switzerland 5-1 (Round of 16), beat the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time in the last eight and eliminated Sweden 2-1 in the semifinal.
