With the impending release of Lagdo dam in Cameroon on the River Benue only days ahead, Lagos State Government has said that it is prepared for the consequences.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said on Monday that it has ramped up preparedness for imminent flood gate opening.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, this is in “line with the paradigm shift from response to effective and efficient disaster management, preparedness and prevention”.
He further said: “The state has carried out holistic measures including the sensitisation and advocacy in historically affected areas, empowerment of local emergency management committees, strengthening of the early warning systems and clearing of drainage and gutters at the State and Local government levels.
“We remain at high alert with improved infrastructure to manage any imminent challenges.
“Lagosians are urged to remain calm”.
At the weekend, the Nigerian Society of Engineers called for immediate construction of flood control dams along the Rivers Niger and Benue to avert flooding likely to be occasioned by the release of Lagdo dam in Cameroon on the River Benue.
