Super Eagles in bonus payment crisis, boycott 1/4 final trip to face Algeria

Players and coaches of the Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech for their next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 fixture, citing unpaid bonuses.

One of the standout teams at the tournament, the Super Eagles, like their Algerian rivals, won all four of their matches so far. The Nigerian side, however, recorded the highest number of goals in the tournament.

On his X handle, a BBC Africa reporter, Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco, winning bonuses from four matches had yet to be paid.

But the squad is said to remain focused but would not train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday,  if the is not resolved.

This marks their second bonus-related strike in three months. During the November 2025 international break, the team also downed tools ahead of a crucial FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon. The dispute was, however, resolved within 24 hours.
