Tai Solarin University Of Education (TASUED) has debunked the allegations made by Comrade Bayo Usman on Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) fee for final year students.

A statement by TASUED Director CITEL, Prof. Adekunle Bamiro and posted on the university Facebook page said that:

‘The attention of the university management was drawn to a letter dated 23 June 2025, written by one Comrade Bayo Usmam which was widely circulated on social media expressing concerns regarding the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) fee for 400-level students at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED)’.

The university administration further clarified that TRCN registration is only required for final-year students in education-based degree programs and is a professional necessity for teaching certification.

They explained that the TRCN fee is nationally standardised and collected to facilitate the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), which is a requirement for teaching certification.

The administration emphasised that the fee is not a revenue-generating venture for the university but rather a facilitative role in the certification process.

‘We appreciate the interest of the writer in the welfare of our students and wish to provide the following clarifications to address the issues raised:

1. TRCN Registration is not mandatory for all students. It is important to state categorically that TRCN registration is applicable only to final-year students who are enrolled in education-based degree programmes.

2. No illegal fee is being collected. The TRCN fee, which is nationally standardised, is collected to facilitate the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) required for teaching certification. TASUED, Nigeria’s premier university of education, plays a facilitative role; not a regulatory one, in this process. The fee is collected on behalf of TRCN, by the guidelines issued by the Council and the Federal Ministry of Education. This is neither a revenue-generating venture for the university nor an act of extortion.

3. The TRCN certification is a professional requirement for teaching in Nigeria. It ensures that graduates are qualified and recognised to teach at all levels of the educational system. Education graduates must pass through TRCN certification. Graduates who may later choose to enter the classroom without this certification will still be required to register, often at greater inconvenience and cost.

4. Clearance process and payment requirements procedure are governed by the academic and professional obligations attached to each student’s course of study. For Education students, TRCN registration is part of their professional preparation and is clearly communicated ahead of time. The claim that students cannot proceed with clearance unless they pay an “illegal” fee is inaccurate.

5. TASUED hosts and facilitates the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) in coordination with the TRCN. The exam is typically conducted at the University Campus, under the direct supervision of TRCN officials. So far TASUED has conducted two batches and inducted two batches of students.

We are committed to operating transparently and ethically, and we take allegations of impropriety seriously. However, we also have a responsibility to correct misinformation that could mislead students, parents, and the general public’.

‘We invite you or any concerned parents to meet with the relevant units at TASUED to discuss any specific issues or observations further. Our doors remain open for dialogue.

‘Thank you once again for your concern and engagement’ the statement concluded.
