President Bola Tinubu has assured Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara that he will not regret his decision to embrace a peace agreement aimed at resolving the state’s prolonged political crisis.
Tinubu gave the assurance on Saturday while speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The President commended Fubara for what he described as maturity and respect for the intervention of elders in resolving the political dispute.
“I want to thank you specifically for maturity, understanding, and respect for the wisdom of elders. When we intervened, you respected our position and maintained peace. You are a committed democrat. Fubara, you will not regret what you have done,” Tinubu told the governor.
The political crisis in Rivers State followed a breakdown in relations between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who played a major role in the governor’s emergence in 2023.
Shortly after Fubara assumed office, the relationship between the two politicians deteriorated, with Wike’s allies dominating the state House of Assembly and making several attempts to impeach the governor.
The dispute later escalated into a state of emergency declared by Tinubu in March 2025, during which the President suspended Fubara and members of the state legislature for six months.
The emergency rule ended in September 2025, allowing Fubara to return to office, although disagreements over the state’s political structure continued.
In January 2026, the state House of Assembly again initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor but suspended the process following further reconciliation efforts.
The political dispute eventually led to Fubara abandoning his re-election ambition and withdrawing from the APC governorship primary. He attributed the decision to the need to restore peace and stability in the state.
Tinubu subsequently intervened again in the disagreement between Fubara and Wike, leading to an agreement by both politicians to work together in support of the President’s re-election bid in 2027.
