Nigerian sprinter, Tobi Amusan has set an African women’s indoor record in the 60 meters, clocking 7.75 seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, United States.
This performance in Boston replaces the previous record of 7.77 seconds set in Kazakhstan at the Astana Indoor Meet in January.
However, despite setting the new record, Amusan came second behind America’s Tia Jones, who breasted the tapa in 7.72 seconds. The Nigerian was followed by Bahama’s Devynne Chalton with a time of 7.76 seconds.
Notably, Amusan had already surpassed the African record on 27th January in her first race of the new athletic season, surpassing the record set longstanding continental mark of 7.82 seconds set in 1999 by compatriot Gloria Alozie.
In January, she had set a new African women’s 60-metre hurdles indoor record with a time of 7.77 seconds. The performance came at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan.
In 2022, Amusan became the first Nigerian to win a World Athletics Championship gold. She also broke the women’s 100m hurdles world record enroute to that triumph.
